HISTÓRIA DO BRASIL

A história brasileira fará sentido?

abraço o torso do Francisco, neste

duvidoso amanhecer.

                                    Aubade.

alem do formato usual, isto é: francês,

dois ramos que envolvem

como dois ponteiros de relógio

só que de tamanhos iguais,

a corola do lírio.

Se não houver Francisco e abraço

e lírio e aurora, não haverá nenhum

sentido. Sem momentos que tais

seremos sempre aqueles seres

perdidos em um continente

interessante e sepulcral.

A história só tem sentido

se feita pele, se reduzida

à possibilidade de encontro matutino

entre homens ah, tão diferentes.

Então faz sentido a História do Brasil.

A HORA E VEZ DE CANDY DARLING

Née John Lawrence Slattery,

a estrela nasceu em três datas possíveis:

‘44, ‘46 ou ’48 — a certa foi guardada

como segredo de Estado.

Candy não era brincadeira: aos 15 ou 17

já fazia trottoir pelo Village, embora

fosse nativa das extensões pequeno-

burguesas de Long Island.

Falar de uma transgênero prostituída

é o mesmo que reduzir alguém, Papa

ou ladrão, a falseadores borborigmos

na traquéia da identidade. Glupt.

Warhol

entendeu-a e propulsou-a, explorando-a

como o mendigo ao cãozinho com catarata.

Fê-la “superstar” em filmes que a crítica

dizia parecer haverem sido rodados

debaixo d’água, ou por alguém com

mal de altura no Karakorum.

Queriam uma estrela como Harlow

ou Joan Fontaine, que despertasse

tesão ou ao menos fizesse chorar.

O efeito que ele buscava e ela criava

relacionava-se com o russo ostraniénie:

estranheza. Em “Mulheres Revoltadas”

nenhuma tem voz maviosa: o “eterno

feminino” que os poetas inventaram

no Romantismo para mantê-las caladas,

desaparece debaixo de tanto pancake

e de tanta pancada. Candy representa

uma socialite feminista que quer tomar

Hollywood de assalto, sem trair os

seus pretensos vínculos de classe.

A seu pai que a acusa, diz: “Dad,

I am as much a Darling as you are”.

Paul Morrissey, que fez os diálogos,

inventou este gens Darling, uma “Grei

Queridinha”: a genealogia-linha, a família

que não é. Candy era o símbolo

dessa linhagem fantástica. No além,

com quem conversará? Benvenuto Cellini?

Olga Del Volga? a sua hora e sua vez

foi essa fala canhestra e canastrona.

Depois disso podia morrer e o fez:

por linfoma e aos 30 incompletos:

se excedera no estrogênio. Tenho-a

emoldurada sobre a janela do quarto

— xeroquei da revista do El País fotos

de Avedon dos membros da Factory

na qual está nua, pisando suas roupas:

com os cabelos longos e lisos

olha de frente, entre Joe D’Alessandro

e mais três deslumbrados atores to-be,

Em sussurros, Raquel me perguntava qual

a hora da genuflexão e a de levantar-se:

tal mímica ritual nos ilusionaria a crer

que o motivo religioso para estarmos

ali ajoelhados equivaleria ao político.

A maioria deixava passar a onda

enquanto esvaziávamos a nave rumo

terá feito suspenderem a violência

minha memória heroiciza a alegoria

A memória teatraliza ambientes,

mesmo os da ditadura, como uma sala

repleta de espelhos só convexos.

Sei que é minha preferência pelo Barroco

o que me faz reencenar o fato fato

HISTORY OF BRAZIL

Does the History of Brazil make sense?

I embrace Francisco’s torso, on

this doubting daybreak.

                                    Aubade.

As his torso is dark, I barely make out

its outlines. My own body

is burned by the summer sun

of this Rio de Janeiro: I do not phosphoresce

by dawn, protected

by my melanin.

There is sense only if I can clutch

Francisco during sun-up. I settle

a noisy kiss on his nape,

right where (I imagine, since I can’t see it)

he got a tattoo of a kind of fleur-de-lys —

Medicea, Florentine —, which possesses,

apart from the usual format, i.e., French,

two branches which embrace,

like the two hands of a clock,

but of equal size,

the corolla of the lily.

If there were no Francisco and embrace

and lily and dawn, there would be no

sense at all. Lacking these moments

we will always be such beings

as are lost on a continent both

interesting and sepulchral.

History only has a sense when

rendered skin, when reduced

to the possibility of early-morning encounters

between men, ah, so very different.

Then the History of Brazil makes sense.

THE HOUR AND TIME OF CANDY DARLING

Née John Lawrence Slattery,

the star was born on three possible dates:

‘44, ‘46 or ‘48 — the right one was held

close as a Secret of State.

Candy didn’t play around: at 15 or 17

our native of the petit-bourgeois

reaches of Long Island had already

hit the streets in the Village.

To speak of a transgender hustler

is the same as reducing someone, Pope

or thief, to gastric distortions

in the trachea of identity. Gloopt.

The difference was her cleverness in

using looks to gain her fame. Warhol

understood her and pushed her, exploited her

like a beggar his dog with cataracts.

He made her a “superstar” in films critics

said looked like they’d been shot

underwater, or by someone with

altitude sickness in Karakorum.

They wanted a star like Harlow

or Joan Fontaine, who got you

horny or at least made you cry.

The effect he sought and she created

was related to the Russian ostranenie:

defamiliarization. In “Women in Revolt”

no one has a gentle voice: the “eternal

feminine” invented by the poets

during Romanticism to keep women quiet

disappears under so much pancake,

so much punching. Candy plays

a feminist socialite who wants to take

Hollywood by storm, without betraying

her alleged class allegiance.

To her accusing father, she says: “Dad,

I am as much a Darling as you are”.

Paul Morrissey, who wrote the dialogue,

invented the Darling gens, a “Darling

Flock”: a genealogical line, a family

that never was. Candy was the symbol

of that fantastic lineage. In the beyond, who

can she possibly talk to? Benvenuto Cellini?

Olga Del Volga? her hour and time

was that awkward hammy speech.

After that she could die and she did:

lymphoma at barely 30 years of age:

an excess of estrogen. I have her

framed over my bedroom window

— I xeroxed photos from El País review,

photos Avedon took of the Factory people,

in which she stands naked on her clothing:

with her long, smooth blond hair

she looks frontward, with Joe D’Alessandro

and three other gorgeous actors-to-be,

with that blasé air which must have fascinated

Warhol more than anything else. Over the years

I’ve come to have a relationship with them

such as one who for centuries collected

bones of martyrs in filigreed reliquaries:

to each their saint, to the faithful

their oh!s. I sigh for Candy Darling,

that’s really what she’d have wanted. She’s

between the bed where I sleep and São Paulo

hovering out there: twenty or thirty

continual kilometers of towers.

A fitting scenario: the tooth of a catechist,

even set in gold and rubies, even

real, even belonging to Saint Pancras,

wouldn’t make it.

NEW DATA IN THE LANDSCAPE

one fat faggot who wants to be photographed

wearing painfully tight toreador pants

for a gay site where you can post whatever

and someone will think he’s sexy and go out with him

and a trans patient in the best hospital in Brazil

perhaps recuperating from her transition

walking to the cashier with her mother and aunt

to pay for parking       right there in front of me

these are new data in the landscape        the clouds

as they accumulate and cross the sky

have no memory of yesterday’s rain

at this precise time over Greater São Paulo

orchids abloom in their great glazed vase

exude a sensual perfume and don’t remember

if their last opening gave such vertiginous results

or if they’ve become conversation pieces at

Hospital Einstein: the ladies at three in the afternoon

have exhausted every blessed thing in the lobby but

no one says a word about this bicha trans with

size 11 feet and big full tits like Sophia Loren:

they prefer to speak of orchids this time of year

oh my that lovely smell! unbelievable! for, yes,

there is something new in the landscape, and the ladies, ah,

yes, the ladies are a bit more careful about what they say.

SERVICE FOR VLADIMIR HERZOG,

31 OCTOBER 1975[2]

Three portals has the São Paulo Cathedral.

The main, a monumental crown for Praça da Sé,[3]

we found occupied and held by military

personnel concentrated on the stairway

leading to the great Gothic Revival portal:

on each step, helmets and truncheons

in contrast with the sanctorale carved

in stone upon the ogive of the portal.

We hurried to the side entryways.

The first, before the Palace of Justice,

also peppered with uniforms. I know

the center of São Paulo like the palm

of my hand: I pulled Sônia by hers

to the entrance on Quintino Bocayúva;

eventually we reached the nave congested

with attendants of each and every faith.

The service was not delayed, and among

the faces around us, we recognized schoolmates:

atheists and Jews, Marxists and bankers’ kids;

unionists and newspaper heirs; and

some of our teachers; and politicians.

In a whisper, Raquel asked me for the

time to genuflect, the time to stand:

such ritual mimicry would illude us

into believing that the religious motives

for being there, on bended knee,

were equivalent to the political.

The majority allowed the wave of such

formalities pass by, their eyes fixed

upon the slow movement at the altar:

after pastor and rabbi, the Cardinal

amid clergy and Herzogs returned

further to speak, and with proverbial

Christian palingenesis manifest

in speech and semblance, urged upon

the gathered an harmonious withdrawal

in measured dispersion toward the metro.

We were afraid. We followed the crucifix

he held aloft, higher than his mitre,

as we emptied the nave on the way

to portal and surrounding military forces.

Do I recall correctly? I visualize him

with cardinal’s gloves and ecclesiastical

episcopal ring, lace over camlet over cascade

of raiment and pallium, all perfectly scarlet — or:

do I recall correctly the expressions of the military

before the pomp of such an act since

they did not count on the spectacle of the Church

emergent, the theater, the raiment, or:

has memory in fact escaped me, and I merely

express a scene I would have preferred

to the reality I here record on point:

elbowed by Eminences all around,

tutti quanti, we leave together, hand in hand.

Did the soldiers’ disbelief before the scene

and vestigial respect for the symbolic

make them postpone violence ordered

by their superiors? Were they frightened

as we of what might have happened,

had paramental folds not held them?

What happened and all I recollect

or invent in the act of recollection

are traversed in my imagination

by ulterior familiarity with religious

scenes out of the history of painting:

my memory heroicizes allegory

via varied references to Veronese,

Tintoretto, and Venetians such as Tiepolo:

the actual events, I no longer remember —

was it me there, really?, all a-tremble in fear,

forced into civitas by a good upbringing?

Thirty-nine years gone by, in this less

heroic world, politicians worry more

about misremembering their shady

accounts in tax havens, or congratulating

themselves before an audience

of drones and suckers, and I sense

the probability that the moment, perhaps,

had not attained so epic a tonus.

The clergy may have left, yes, at the fore

of the flock, yet in a fashion more prosaic,

more orderly – without mitre, scarlat, crucifix –

foot after foot, with no defiant grandeur

but, yes, with courage and confidence.

Memory theatralizes all surroundings,

even the dictatorship’s, like a hall

filled with convex mirrors only.

I know my preference for the Baroque

makes me re-enact the fact fact

and recreate that ecumenical service

in visual patterns more Vatican

than merely Paulistano.

Within this text fits fear and its obverse;

heroism; a dense, almost tactile silence;

pathos, the drizzle, the city’s gray;

and the feeling, which yet endures (for it matters

not in which scenario one’s narrative occurs),

that a boundary was being crossed and

henceforth it would be no longer quite

so simple to forge grotesque scenes of suicide

in dungeons where dissidents were tortured.

We exit holding hands, protected by tutelary

figures, to the Polish corridor of armed

men regarding us with hostility, hate and

contempt as we cross the hundred meters

to the metro. There we regain the breath

we’d abated, our dignity put to the test.

On October 24, 1975, he was detained by miltary intelligence; they said they wanted to question him about his membership in the Communist Party. The next day, October 25, it was announced that he had been found hanged in his cell, and his death was ruled a suicide. Evidence showed that he had been tortured, and strongly suggested that he was murdered by agents of the military government. 8000 people attended his funeral. His death certificate was officially revised in 2012.
